Exhibition “Blue as velvet” by Baptiste Laurent

Blue as Velvet plays on an incongruous comparison, made possible by velvet and lapis-lazuli, the central materials of the series. These elements evoke images rich in emotion and reference: blue, between nostalgia, the music of the blues, the mystery of the night, Mediterranean indigo pigment, or Yves Klein blue; velvet, with its softness and elegance, recalls stage curtains and antique tapestries.

Figures and objects painted in negative are defined by their contours, the material absorbing light to create a unique contrast. Baptiste revisits these works intermittently, allowing the Blue as Velvet series to develop over more than six years.
