Elegant tête-à-tête with Abigaïl Auperin
Through her photographs, Abigai?l Auperin tells a story. Her inspiration can come from any source, as long as it is narrative, whether it be a great historical painting, a comic strip, an arthouse or genre film. The stories she invents are told in series, sometimes over several years, and are an ode to desire. But nothing – or very little – is actually shown because beyond the narrative what fascinates her is a representation of reality, the absent presence that can be found in both fashion photography and spirit photogra- phy. Her photographic stories are dominated by what happens out of frame and by a sense of time- lessness. Meticulously planned using detailed storyboards, her scenes recreate the fascinating art of the diorama on the screen, in the frame or on the page.
What is your greatest thrill?
Being married to the exceptional guy who supports me; living with Antoine by my side is a pleasure that grows with each passing year.
Your favourite gourmet pleasure?
The palate! I’m passionate about good wine, with a particular penchant for vins de voile, vin jaune, Arbois Savagnin… I’ll stop there, because the list could get very long.
What does elegance mean to you?
Maybe it’s silence; a carefully considered, controlled silence. Silence that cloaks generous actions as if to protect them from vanity.
What was your most enjoyable travel experience?
Without a doubt, Japan. I was lucky enough to travel there as a photographer and it was an incredible experience, both professionally and personally. I felt that there was something strangely familiar there. I can’t wait to go back.
What is your main source of inspiration?
Definitely being a spectator. The rush of emotion when I watch Vertigo for the 58th time or listen to Gesualdo’s Madrigals – Book VI…
