A little stroll through Paris

Portes ouvertes (Open day)

They are artisans. They have a street-front presence in Paris. You just need to push open the door of their workshop to see them at work. Starting with the ceramic artist Karen Swami (6 rue Victor Schoelcher, in the 14th arrondissement). Her skilful hands manipulate the clay, the lathe and the kiln, as passers-by watch in amazement. In the same vicinity, with goldsmith Jean-Pierre Cottet-Dubreuil (30 rue des Gravilliers, 3rd arrondissement). Here, a stone’s throw from the Carreau du Temple, you’ll find dies, balance presses, grindstones, polishers… all the tools you need to create or re-silver jewellery. Helena Amourdedieu has set up her Singer machines just a few streets away (24 rue Charlot, 3rd arrondissement): “I’m a tapestry-maker. That’s different to an upholsterer, who only does the seats.  A tapestry-maker makes all the textile pieces needed to adorn a space”. Calling all dawdlers and fans of a certain ode to slowness.
